José Gonçalves was born in Lisbon in 1968.
Between 1985 and 1989 he attended the in António Arroio School of arts, where he learned the basics, developing the passion for photography.
He was Photographer during the military service in 1989, and after that he continues to photograph the streets of Lisbon, places, faces and the life of its inhabitants.
In 1994 starts to study photography in AR.CO (Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual) finishing in 1996. He starts his professional career and works in PUBLICO newspaper in 1998. Between 1999 and 2000 gets involved in a project for Gulbenkian Foundation, and photographs along with another journalist Antónia Barroso, the DOURO River for a Cdrom.
In 2000 works in FOCUS magazine (Portuguese edition) and leaves in 2002. He dedicates his time with personal projects and work as a Free-lancer photographer.
Presently he teaches photography in workshops on a studio.
